I think one of the reasons that her books are so popular is exactly that: They're easy. Most fiction offers an escape or distraction from real life problems, but not all fiction is easy.

You have not ruined your reputation on this forum, all you did was offer a differing opinion, which is a good thing. Well I would disagree with you, this disagreeing of opinions is exactly why this forum was created. Well that and advice on writing.

It's hard to argue with "simple is nice sometimes," but I still feel like it's gotten out of control. What I really want to see is massive enthusiasm for really great literature. Blockbuster movies are being made out of Twilight and Harry Potter and Cirque de Freak (or however it's spelled) which all appeal to more or less the same audience.
One part of me wants to argue that really great literature doesn't translate well into really great film, though (Lord of the Rings, for example).

Steven King is not a fan of Twilight, and clearly declared that Stephanie Meyer had no writing ability whatsoever.
Many of her fans responded with stuff such as "no one reads your stuff", proving a general lack of worldly knowledge among her staunch defenders.
Also her vampires are not in any way vampires.
I rest my case.

I haven't read it. I don't plan on it. I have no interest whatsoever in Twilight. It's not the books I hate (although I am pretty damn convinced that I won't like those either), it's the ridiculousness of the entire phenomenon that gets me. How people think it's the be-all-end-all of literature, she's the next Shakespeare or Bram Stoker. And it's not, and she's not. More than anything, it's the crazy fans who make me mad. They give a bad name to other teenage fans of things. People start to think all teenagers who love anything are just like them. And we're not. I love Harry Potter, but my favorite authors are Poe and Kafka and writers like that.
But it is just simple literature read and memorized by teenagers who may become the future readers of books with Fabio on the cover. I thought the Lord of the Rings Trilogy did make great movies, though.
