You must read:
Ishi in Two Worlds. It's an incredible account of the last "wild Indian" coming from the woods of California into "civilization." He was the very last human of his culture. Unbelievable history of California's Native/Settler situation. Every American is incomplete and utterly ignorant until this book has been read.
A Community Writing Itself: Conversations with Vanguard Writers of the Bay Area. It's a book of interviews with twelve Bay Area writers discussing poetry, narrative, prose, literary movements in the US, social movements, physical movements...at least read the introduction and get an idea of the community writers had. It reminds me of the community we have.

With that kind of recommendation I almost have to fly to a book store and purchase this immediately.
