I wrote this for my English class. The assignment was, essentially, a definition paper.
I attempted to define poetry, or at least make a more concrete differentiation between it and prose. I've noticed near anything can be considered poetry, and have sometimes felt forced to accept, what I felt was, a horrible piece of writing as poetry.
I wanted to alleviate that. I wanted to construct a model which still allowed for poetry's inherent subjectivity, but defined said subjectivity more concretely than, "Poetry is anything" (such as one defines sadness, even though what one feels sadness toward is completely subjective).
I've posted my exact definition, but I implore anyone who's interested to read the whole paper—it, I believe, makes a good case for said definition, and anyone who reads it will have a far better understanding as to what the following actually means.

Poetry is not a definitive form of writing as much as it is a sub-genre of prose. It is defined by one’s subjective experience, and lacks a specific denotation in terms of form. To some, a bit of writing may be considered poetry—while to others, it is rubbish.
In addition, I propose that a piece of prose should be considered poetry when the manner in which it is written (whether it is wording, structure, or rhythm) plays a large role in provoking an emotional response . . . Line breaks, for example, may be a major structural factor that gives the poem its essence, but that does not necessarily need to be a prevailing factor in all poetry.
